Munich Airport will lift the 100-millilitre restriction for liquids in hand luggage at all its security checkpoints, effective from 18 September 2026. This change will permit liquid containers with a capacity of up to two litres to be carried in hand luggage. Additionally, electronic devices such as laptops will no longer need to be removed from hand luggage and placed separately on the security belt, thanks to the implementation of CT scanning technology.

Opinion

Following Zürich Airport, Munich is now following suit and removing the omnipresent 100ml restriction, along with the requirement to remove electronic devices from bags. This is great news: I feel that many issues arising at security checkpoints are due to liquids, as people often forget bottles in their backpacks or devices in their briefcases.

Here is a list of larger airports that currently allow up to 2 litres of liquids or offer at least less restrictive measures. Note that while some airports may have CT scanning technology available, they also require regulatory approval. Just the technology itself is not sufficient to remove the restrictions.

* only partially implemented. It can be limited to certain terminals, exclude transit security, or come with other restrictions.

Outside of Europe, many other large airports have implemented CT technology (e.g., Dubai, Hong Kong, Tokyo Narita and Haneda). However, none have raised the liquid limits as Munich has. Hong Kong, for example, allows passengers to keep liquids in their bags but still limits them to 100ml.
